We were blown away by the VR_I experience, a feeling probably similar to that of the first cinemagoers when they discovered Train Pulling into a Station by the Lumière brothers. Choreographer Gilles Jobin reinvents our relationship with dance, movement, the others and even ourselves thanks to immersive virtual reality.

Wearing a headset and sensors, you become an avatar immersed in a larger than life virtual reality environment. Gilles Jobin renews his art and brings giants to life literally and figuratively, enormous ten-metre-high figures that look over you like lab rats, as if the giants in Matisse’s painting Dance suddenly appeared before you. For us, VR_I is a topical work of art that immerses us within ourselves while we fail to recognise ourselves as virtual avatars. A contemporary work that takes us into the future through the age-old art of dancing.

VR_I was selected for the 2018 Sundance Film Festival and received the FNC EXPLORE Innovation Award as well as the FNC EXPLORE Performances/Installations People’s Choice Award for the best performance at the 46^th Festival du Nouveau Cinema in Montreal.
