At BFM, dying, gathering, and singing Mozart's "Requiem" with the living

01 - 02 nov 2019 | BFM - Bâtiment des Forces Motrices | Durée : 1h40

Requiem pour L.

Fabrizio Cassol / Alain Platel

At Bâtiment des Forces Motrices (BFM)

The authors resuscitate Mozart’s Requiem at the crossroads of opera, jazz and African music. Belgian stage director and choreographer Alain Platel and Italian composer Fabrizio Cassol bring to life this Christian prayer for the dead, which they combine with African rituals. On the screen, L. (for Lucie) “has offered” Alain Platel her dying moments, the time of which she has chosen, knowing that she is terminally ill. This requiem is for her, as well as for those whom we have loved.

This play received three prizes at the KONTAKT International Theatre Festival in Torun (Poland) for Best Production and Best Soundtrack as well as the Critics’ Award (May 2018).

“In our minds, theatre is always a ceremony. This show, which sweeps everything away wherever it is performed, features a prayer for the dead, and for one in particular on All Saints Day. It focuses on love and death and music, as everything does in theatre. This ceremony, like a posthumous message to the public, does not advocate for medically assisted death, however. In front of such a mirror, we find ourselves in communion with all our losses, past and future.” NKDM
